In my family, history is not something distant. It includes a great-great-grandfather who never returned from the Eastern Front of the First World War, a great-grandfather who fought in the Second World War and took part in the Slovak National Uprising, and a great-grandmother’s brother who, during the Prague Spring, supported political pluralism, openly rejected the invasion of the Warsaw Pact and was later persecuted by the regime. After the fall of socialism, he was also among the first to speak out against Vladimír Mečiar and warned Václav Havel about the direction Czechoslovakia was heading.
